As we still continue to grow we are now on the lookout for a knowledgeable and experienced diesel mechanic, to join our team and support our extensive fleet of equipment. Candidates will ideally have a background as a diesel / aero nautical mechanic or extensive experience within a similar role. Due to the nature of our equipment, candidates will also be required to already possess a thorough understanding and working knowledge of hydraulics. However, we will work with you to build your knowledge and technical ability, across our range of specialist services.
As the role progresses, you will then take on responsibility for the day to day maintenance and repairs of trucks, trailers, conventional axles, SPMT’s, pick and carry cranes, crawler cranes, hydraulic engines, jacking systems, skidding systems etc. Undertaking all aspects of the maintenance process, such as planning, servicing, fault finding, ordering parts, liaising with manufacturers and suppliers and managing records.

Therefore, within the role you will have exposure to exciting and challenging opportunities that other mechanical roles traditionally do not offer.
Although based out of Cleveland, South Africa, Vanguard’s fleet and team operate on a much wider scale, with the business delivering projects both nationally and internationally on a regular basis. As a mechanic you may also have the opportunity for international travel as part of the role and be expected to support projects where required.
Key Role Responsibilities
Responsibilities for the role include but are not confined to the following:
- Planning / scheduling equipment maintenance.
- Fault finding and repairs.
- Arranging stock parts.
- Liaising with manufacturers and suppliers.
- Maintaining records and maintaining tracking software.
- Supporting office activities (scheduling transportation, supporting equipment schedules).
- Equipment servicing.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Mandatory:
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar role
- Knowledge and experience of hydraulics, air lines and piping.
- Current and valid driving licence.
Desirable:
- Conventional trailer and SPMT experience (maintenance / operation).
- Forklift / telehandler licence.
- Crane licence.
- Current and valid passport, with no restrictions.
- HSQE qualifications.
- Fabrication experience/qualifications.
- Equipment inspection qualifications.
